Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
The shagbark hickory is a large deciduous tree native to eastern North America, typically growing 60 to 80 feet tall. It is easily recognized by its distinctive shaggy, peeling bark and compound leaves composed of five leaflets that turn bright yellow in autumn. Its broad, rounded crown provides ample shade.
Shagbark hickories produce sweet, edible nuts encased in thick, green husks, which are highly valued by wildlife, including squirrels, birds, and deer. The nuts are also prized by humans for baking and snacking. In late spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers that contribute to nut development.
Adaptable to a variety of soils and tolerant of urban conditions, the shagbark hickory is often planted for shade, wildlife habitat, and ornamental appeal. Its striking bark, autumn foliage, and nut production make it a valuable addition to forests, parks, and large yards.
