Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra)
The Ohio buckeye is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to the Midwestern and Eastern United States, typically growing 40 to 60 feet tall. It has a rounded crown and palmate, glossy green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Its gray-brown bark is smooth when young, developing shallow ridges as it matures.
In spring, the tree produces upright clusters of yellow-green flowers that attract pollinators, followed by smooth, shiny brown seeds encased in a leathery husk. These seeds, known as buckeyes, are toxic to humans but are consumed by wildlife such as squirrels and deer.
Ohio buckeyes thrive in rich, well-drained soils and are often planted as specimen trees in parks, yards, and along streets. Their unique leaves, striking spring flowers, and wildlife value make them a distinctive and attractive addition to the landscape.
