American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)
The American hazelnut is a small deciduous shrub or multi-stemmed tree native to eastern North America, typically reaching 8 to 15 feet tall. It forms a rounded, dense crown with bright green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. The bark is smooth and gray-brown, developing slight ridges with age.
In early spring, the tree produces conspicuous yellow catkins, followed by small, edible nuts encased in leafy husks. These nuts are a valuable food source for wildlife such as squirrels, birds, and deer, and are also prized by humans for snacking and baking.
Highly adaptable to a variety of soils and tolerant of both sun and partial shade, the American hazelnut is often used for wildlife habitat, hedgerows, and naturalized landscapes. Its combination of ornamental appeal, ecological value, and nut production makes it a versatile and attractive native plant.
