Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima)

The Chinese chestnut is a medium to large deciduous tree native to China, often reaching heights of 40 to 60 feet. It has a broad, rounded crown with glossy, serrated leaves that turn yellow to orange in the fall. The bark is gray-brown with shallow furrows, adding subtle texture to the tree’s overall appearance.

In late summer, the Chinese chestnut produces long, spiny burs containing edible nuts prized for their sweet flavor. These nuts attract wildlife, including squirrels and birds, and are also enjoyed by people for culinary use. The tree blooms with long, yellowish catkins in early summer, adding seasonal interest.

Chinese chestnuts are highly resistant to chestnut blight, making them a popular choice for reforestation and urban planting. Adaptable to a range of soils and sun conditions, this tree provides shade, food, and visual appeal, making it an excellent addition to parks, gardens, and landscapes seeking both beauty and utility.
