Black Oak (Quercus velutina)

Black oak is a stately native hardwood valued for its strength, longevity, and classic forest character. It typically grows 50–80 feet tall, developing a broad, rounded crown with deeply lobed, dark green leaves that turn rich shades of red, orange, and brown in autumn. Its dark, rough, furrowed bark provides strong year-round texture and visual interest.

In spring, black oak produces subtle catkins, followed by small acorns in fall that are an important food source for wildlife. Its deep root system and sturdy structure make it highly wind- and drought-tolerant once established.

Adaptable to a variety of soils, particularly well-drained and upland sites, black oak is a resilient and long-lived tree. It is an excellent choice for naturalized landscapes, parks, restoration plantings, and large residential properties, contributing ecological value and timeless beauty.
